We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader to join Ōpōtiki District Council as our Communications and Governance Manager. This pivotal role provides senior level leadership across communications, engagement, and governance, ensuring best practice, strong organisational reputation, and high quality strategic advice to senior leaders and elected members.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Communications & Engagement
- Lead the development and delivery of Council’s Communications and Engagement Strategy
- Manage communication risks, including crisis and high profile issues
Governance Leadership
- Oversee and continuously improve Council’s governance frameworks and processes
- Provide high level governance advice to elected members, the CEO, and senior leaders
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including LGOIMA and LGA
People Leadership
- Lead and develop a high performing, multi-disciplinary team
- Build organisational capability in communications, engagement, and governance
Stakeholder & Relationship Management
- Build strong relationships with iwi, media, stakeholders, and partner organisations
- Represent Council at events, hui, and forums
- Support meaningful engagement with Māori and the wider community
We are seeking a strategic leader with strong political awareness and management-level experience, excellent communication skills, sound judgement, and a collaborative approach. The ideal candidate will also have:
- A bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field (postgraduate study preferred)
- 7+ years’ experience in senior communications, engagement, or governance roles
- Knowledge of governance and democratic processes (public sector experience an advantage)
- Experience advising senior leaders and elected members
