Te Kaha is a place that holds special meaning and connection to those who call it home.
As the area continues to grow, Ōpōtiki District Council is inviting the community to help shape a long-term vision for the area through the development of a new masterplan.
The masterplan will help guide future investment, facilities, access, public spaces and other improvements while ensuring the unique character and strengths of Te Kaha are reflected in future decision-making.
Ōpōtiki District Council, Strategy and Development Group Manager, Antoinette Campbell, said the masterplan would create a shared vision for the future of Te Kaha.
“Before any plans are developed, Council wants to hear directly from the community about what they value most about Te Kaha. The challenges they see today, and the opportunities they would like future generations to enjoy.
“This is an opportunity for the community to tell us what makes Te Kaha special, what needs to be protected, and what improvements would make the biggest difference in the years ahead.
“That feedback will help inform the masterplan, to guide future projects and investment while ensuring decisions reflect the aspirations of the community,” Ms Campbell said.
Council is encouraging anyone who lives in Te Kaha, has whakapapa there, owns property, works in the area, visits regularly, or has strong family and community ties to get involved.
“The masterplan is there to ensure future development aligns with what the community wants. By working with iwi, hapū, stakeholders and the wider community, we can identify priorities, understand future needs and create a roadmap for how improvements can be delivered over time,” Ms Campbell said.
Early engagement has already begun with hapū and iwi, alongside initial discussions with community representatives, to help identify some early themes.
“Having an agreed vision will also help when seeking funding and ensures future projects support long-term community aspirations,” Ms Campbell said.
People can share their ideas and learn more about the project through council’s Hono Mai engagement website. Additional community engagement opportunities will also be held for the community to share their ideas. Follow council’s Facebook page for updates.
