Ōpōtiki District Council held its latest citizenship ceremony on Monday morning (25 May 2026), welcoming six new citizens to the district and to New Zealand.
Mayor David Moore conducted the ceremony, which recognised individuals and families originally from Tonga, India, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Malaysia as they officially became New Zealand citizens.
Before the oaths and affirmations and the presentation of Citizenship Certificates, Mayor Moore spoke on behalf of Council and the wider community in congratulating those taking part in the ceremony.
“Becoming a citizen is a significant milestone and a proud moment for you and your families. It is also a special occasion for our district as we welcome new members into our community.
“Each of you brings your own experiences, cultures and perspectives, helping to strengthen and enrich Ōpōtiki. Choosing to make New Zealand your home is an important decision and we are grateful you have chosen to make your home here in our district.
“On behalf of Council and the wider community, I warmly welcome you and wish you all the very best for your future in Aotearoa New Zealand,” Mayor Moore said.
Family and friends attended the ceremony to celebrate the occasion alongside the new citizens.
Those welcomed at the ceremony were: Siosionoa Sangato Venasio Tupou Latu, Amardeep Singh, Joel Edward Curley, Harroop Singh, Lydia Johanna Wallbrink, Charles Chun Min Chai.
