First hanbar cast
The harbour walls require approximately 14,000 concrete hanbar units to armour the rock structure against wave action and scour. Sizes will range from 2 tonne to 15 tonne, with the larger units standing about 2.4m tall. The final numbers and sizes won’t be known until the final design, but we know now that we will need about 8,000 of the 2t units for protecting the insides of the walls. Casting has now started on the 2 tonne and 5 tonne units, and will ramp up over the next month. Units are being cast in advance of the breakwater construction to provide an adequate stockpile to match breakwater construction rates.
C Hayes Engineering have created the hanbar moulds, Eastern Bay Concrete are providing the concrete they are formed from, and HEB Construction are doing the casting.
