Wharf demolition works

After a 6 week suspension of works, our contractors are now set to return to complete demolition works at the Opotiki Wharf tomorrow (Monday 19 March). Works had previously been suspended due to safety concerns after protest action took place at the Wharf.

Back in 2015, structural engineers found the 1920's section of the wharf to be unsafe and at risk of imminent collapse, even in a minor earthquake. We are eager to complete the works so that section can be removed and the area reopened for public use.

The contractors will create a steel sheet pile wall behind the existing wharf to retain earth in place, protecting the river environment and allowing the degraded concrete structure of the 1920’s section to be demolished.

For any questions or concerns please contact Ōpōtiki District Council on 07 3153030.
