Additional comment from Opotiki Councillor, Arihia Tuoro.
“This announcement is excellent news for the Opotiki District and it is the sort of initiative that can make a genuine difference to local people’s lives. We have some unique challenges locally and this programme lets us find a way forward that works for us locally. So I am looking forward to seeing this in action.
“We have many young people living rurally or in isolated communities and there often isn’t an alternative to private transport to get places. And I know that helping one person to get their licence will have a wider impact than just that one individual – it means better options for families, friends and even neighbours. It will be great to see the ‘rubber hit the road’ and see and hear about individuals helped through this programme
“It is also a recognition of the skills we will need when our Harbour is redeveloped and it is fantastic to see the tangible benefits for the community already starting,” Ms Tuoro said.
