In 2016 central government made changes to the Shop Trading Hours Act 1990. The key changes include:
- Councils can now create local policies to allow shop trading across their entire district or in limited areas of the district on Easter Sunday.
- All shop employees have the legal ability to refuse to work on Easter Sunday without providing a reason to their employer.
Opotiki District Council has developed a draft Easter Sunday Shop Trading Policy and is seeking your views. The ‘statement of proposal’ sets out our draft policy and why we are proposing it. It also sets out how you can have your say.
