Our Key Partners

Ōpōtiki District Council is working closely with a number of key partners to progress this project. These partners are:

• Local people, businesses and organisations that have supported the vision and processes to date
• Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board
• Eastern Sea Farms Limited
• The New Zealand Government, including various Ministries and Departments including NZTE, NZTA, MSD, DOC
• Horizon Energy Distribution Limited 
• Bay of Plenty Regional Council
• Bay of Connections
• BayTrust
• Community Outcomes Bay of Plenty

A  Memorandum of Undertaking is in place with the Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board, which sets out our joint intent to work together to bring the harbour development project to fruition and establish a base for marine farming and processing in Ōpōtiki. A similar agreement is in place with Eastern Sea Farms Limited.

How our partners are supporting this project

Stage One
The feasibility study that led to this project was jointly funded by the New Zealand Ministries of Economic Development and Social Development, BayTrust and the Ōpōtiki  District Council.

Stage Two
Detailed engineering and technical studies to identify the preferred training structure option for the harbour mouth were completed with funding and support coming from Horizon Energy Distribution Limited, BayTrust, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Opotiki District Council.

Horizon Energy Distribution Limited provided financial assistance and technical support in the development of the business case to be made to Government for the final design and construction phase.

BayTrust gave a financial contribution of $200,000 from the Trust's Community Development Fund.

Stage Three
Detailed planning both for the harbour development and for wider community development are the current focus, along with securing funding for the "build" stage of the harbour entrance. The current stage is very important, in order to ensure sustainable development for environmental, economic, social and cultural resources.

Opotiki District Council and Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board, along with BayTrust, NZTA, NZTE and Bay of Connections, are actively involved in this stage, and are seeking further Government interest and support.

Stage Four
Opotiki Harbour construction.
The New Zealand Government is being asked to contribute a portion of the project's construction phase estimated to be $40 million).
