The Opotiki Distrtict was the first in the country to adopt a zero waste policy and it continues to lead the way in minimising and managing solid waste in an environmentally responsible and sanitary manner.
Solid waste and recyclable materials are collected from some 1,700 properties in the Opotiki, Woodlands and Hikutaia area, which houses approximately half of the District’s population. Resource Recovery Centres are also operated at Te Kaha and Waihau Bay, with a further two community-run centres at Torere and Maraenui.
The two Resource Recovery Centres have a combined replacement value in excess of $1 million. Annual operating costs are about $950,000, funded from targeted rates and direct fees and charges.
