The Opotiki District’s parks and reserves play an important role in promoting community wellbeing and healthy recreation. They also help beautify the district, ensure that public access to our coastal assets is maintained and contribute to the conservation of our natural environment.
The district has some ____ hectares of parks, gardens, playgrounds and reserves, largely located in urban areas and along the coast. Together with their associated amenities (toilet blocks, boat ramps and so on), they have a combined value of some $8.5 million. Major facilities include Waioeka Domain, Ohiwa Domain, Waiotahi Domain and Memorial Park.
Amongst the significant recent and planned developments adding value to our parks and reserves are the $500,000 sports pavilion constructed at the Waioeka Domain in 2006/07 and a $6 million Events Centre planned for Memorial Park in 2012/13. New toilet facilities are also planned for the Waiotahi Drifts and Volkners Islands Reserves in 2009/10, and at Waiotahi Beach in 2013/14.
Maintaining our parks and reserves currently costs in excess of $800,000 a year, 90% of which is funded by rates.
