Provisions for controlling advertising signs visible from a State Highway.
Advertising signs visible from roads -
(i) Shall not reduce or obstruct the conspicuity of official signs
(ii) Shall identify the site and the activities thereon.
(ii) Shall have a minimum lettering and height of 120 mm where the posted speed limit is less than 70 km/h and 160 mm where the speed limit is 70 km/h or greater.
(iv) Shall be situated:
(a) on the property to which they relate, with the exception of advance warning signs.
(b) as far away as practicable from known accident locations with an accident record above twice the national average.
(c) as close as practicable to the entrance to the site to which they relate or where an entrance could be safely located.
(d) at least 15 m from an "official sign" so as not to obstruct driver visibility along the road and at intersections and driveways.
(v) Shall be erected at right angles to the road.
(vi) Shall display a message of up to a maximum of six words and/or symbols, with a maximum of 40 characters.
(vii) May incorporate a removable panel indicating if the business is open or closed.
(viii) Shall present an unrestricted view to the motorist for a minimum distance of 180 m where the posted speed limit is 70 km/h or greater.
(vix) Shall not be illuminated where the posted speed limit is 70 km/h or more, unless :
(a) The premises is open for business.
(b) The source of illumination is defused or is not visible to drivers.
Information requirement for consent applications
Applicants for a resource consent must take into account the following additional requirements:
(i) All freestanding signs which are situated within the boundaries of a State Highway with a speed limit greater than 50 km/h are subject to Transit New Zealand Bylaw 1987/3.
(ii) Signs must comply with Section 130(3) of the Traffic Regulations 1976, which prevents signs which resemble or incorporate official signs or traffic signals.
