 About Opotiki District

Opotiki District is made up of miles of coastline, clean fast running rivers, vast areas of native bush and farmland. The people of the district live in a number of communities scattered along the coast. Each community has a strong and distinctive spirit and an inherent appreciation of the area in which they live. This forms the basis of the solid and determined collective community in which the Opotiki District Council works.

The district is identified as OpotikiCoast by Nature in recognition of the distinctive characteristics of the people and their affinity to the natural environment.

 Representation

The Council consists of 6 Councillors who are elected by ward, and the Mayor who is elected at large. A Coast Community Board represents the interests of the residents in the Coast ward.

There are also two standing committees of Council, the Tourism and Promotions Committee and the Sport and Recreation committee. These committees are made up of both Council members and community representatives and they provide focus and advice on their specific areas.
